Fish are the perfect pets for people who really want to have a pet but doesn’t have enough time for them or doesn’t have enough space in their place. To have a fish as a pet is very beautiful to look at and is low maintenance and inexpensive as well. The pet is also perfect for people who love to have a pet bit are allergic or even with houses which have small children. Fishes are also perfect for small children who want to learn to take care of their pet and is a perfect first pet for them. Though it looks easy it is very difficult to choose your first fish as there are over 25,00 species of fishes available in the market.

If you are a first timer with fishes, then a small aquarium is recommended with just 2 3 normal Goldfishes. Also, you should do some research on how big or small aquarium you need and how can you take care of your fish. Before bringing home a fish you must know how big aquarium they need, what kind of food should be fed to them and the temperature of water that is suitable for them.  Here are some of the fish and their species that you might want to pet.

Danios

Danios fish species are very small in size and have black stripes on them. They are also famously known as the zebra fish because of the scale. They are very easy to maintain and loves to be in a community which can be minimum a group of 5. These species can easily survive in a small tank having just 5 gallons of water but need a bit more space so that they can easily move around. You’ll also need to fit a filter in their aquarium and the temperature must be maintained between 65 to 77 degrees F.

Angel fish

Pterophyllum which is famously known as the Angel fish are one of the most popular aquarium fishes among the fish species. They can be seen in most of the aquariums you see. Angelfishes can easily live with other fishes in an aquarium. They can grow up to 10 inches so they need an aquarium with at least 20 gallons of water. Also, they can be a little aggressive when they grow up so it is not recommended to introduce smaller or younger fishes in the same aquarium as the adult Angel fish. The temperature of the water must be maintained from 74 to 78 degrees F.

Goldfish

Goldfish is another most common fish species that you can see a lot of the time. It is also very easy to identify a goldfish as their whole body is golden. As goldfishes don’t need a heater in their tank it is very difficult to keep them with other tropical fishes. Also, it is very easy to pet a Goldfish and they can grow very big. Because of this, they need to be kept in a large aquarium with at least 20 gallons of water. The largest Goldfish to date was measured to be 19 inches long and the second largest was measured to be 15 inches long. Though Goldfishes can stay alone, most people keep two goldfishes in a round aquarium which is said to be for good luck in many places.

Betta

These fishes are also known as the Siamese Fighting Fish as they tend to fight with other Betta fishes. So it is recommended that you keep just one Betta fish in one aquarium. Also, you should also see that there are no other fishes who can pick at the fins of the Betta as they have long fins.

Guppy

Yellow Tang

Cherry Barb

Pearl Gourami

The male Pearl Gourami species are more colorful and thinner with angular bodies than the females.

Swordtails

Another thing you should be careful of is that when you want to breed them you should keep them separate from their parents as they may try to eat their fry. Discus

Discus can easily be kept with other fishes who need the same water temperature as they do which is 82 to 88 degrees F. Also, Discus species should not be kept along with the aggressive fishes as they can hurt the Discus fish species.

Killifish

Though Killifishes are mostly peaceful they might get aggressive with other male Killifishes. So it is recommended that in an aquarium only 1 male Killifish is kept. They have to be kept in a tank with minimum of 20 gallons of water and the temperature must be maintained between 72 to 75 degrees F.

Plecostomus

Also, most of the catfish family need to have a dark hiding spot so you must keep a tunnel or caves works in your aquarium as well.  A Plecostomus can grow as small as 2 inches to as big as 2 feet.

Rainbow fish

Corydoras Catfish

Neon Tetra

The Clown fishes needs to be kept in an aquarium with minimum 20 gallon capacity. The temperature of the water must be maintained between 75 to 85 degrees F. A Clown fish can grow up to 3.5 inches long.

Green Terror Cichlids

In these species, the male Green Terror are larger than the female and they also have a little bump on the front of their head when they become adult. Piranha

Also, most Piranha species attack on large mammals in groups and can eat all their flesh in just a couple of seconds. The Piranhas must be kept in an aquarium with at least 50 gallons of capacity. Bloodfin Tetras

White Cloud

Lyretail Anthias

The male and female Lyretail Anthias can be identified through their color as the female are a bit more like orange and the males have a more reddish tone. These fish species must be kept in at least 130 gallons of water and the temperature must be maintained between 72 to 78 degrees F. Because of the large water capacity, most beginners are not recommended to keep this fish species. They can grow up to 5 inches long.
