Parrots are kept as pet nowadays by many people. In order to keep the parrot happy and healthy proper care is required. There are many ailments that can make them fall sick. To prevent different diseases they should get proper treatment from vet and care. You need to be aware of parrot behavior to know your parrot is sick. You should treat your parrot in early health problem otherwise there is a chance of their death. Here are some of the common parrot diseases and its treatment that they suffer from.

Parrot Disease and Cure that you need to consider are as follows:

  1. Psittacosis (Parrot fever)

Psittacosis is parrot fever caused due to bacteria living in host’s cells. The symptoms that you see in your parrot are lack of appetite, difficulty breathing, depression, watery and green droppings and discharge from eyes and nose. If you see these symptoms in your parrot you should immediately take them to vet otherwise can lead to sudden death in parrot. This disease is a communicable disease and can even transmit to humans and will present itself as being very flu-like. An avian vet can treat them with antibiotic under the proper care can be cured.

  1. Polyomavirus

Polyomavirus is a parrot disease caused by the virus that can spread by infected birds and latent carriers. This is a very dangerous disease and even effect young parrots. Furthermore, Budgies are considered as one of the most prevalent carriers. So, if you have them you should take more care of them. The symptoms that your parrot is infected by polyomavirus are the swollen abdomen, loss of appetite, vomiting or diarrhea, weight loss and dehydration. And for this prevention, vaccination against polyomavirus is recommended in the early age of the parrot. But there is no treatment for the infected bird. The bird place should be hygiene and limited contact between infected birds. So, this is the best preventive measures to protect against this disease.

  1. Pacheco’s Disease

Similarly, Pacheco’s disease is a deadly viral disease caused by a form of the herpes virus. This disease is transferred through infected feces and nasal discharge. Stress such as encountered when moving, breeding, or brooding over the loss of mate can active the virus which had been inactive in your parrot. The symptoms of Pacheco’s disease is tremors, Lethargy, Sinusitis, Anorexia and green droppings. For this treatment, anti-viral drug acyclovir can be effective if treated as early as possible. It can even cause kidney damage in your parrot if not treated early. Above all, this disease is highly transmissible and deadly disease.  Quarantine treatment is best for this disease.

  1. Parrot Disease and Cure for “Giardia”

Giardia is a parasitic disease that can be transferred from diseased birds through cyst release into bird feces. The symptoms of this protozoal disease with these symptoms are diarrhea, dry itching skin, weight loss and bulky stool. For the treatment of giardia, several courses antibiotics are required. To prevent this disease the aviary should be clean and hygiene and avoid overcrowding.

  1. Bacterial infection

The sign and symptoms of bacterial infection in parrot are discharge in the choana or nares, Plaques or white, ropy mucus in the oropharynx, wheezing and sinusitis. To determine if the parrot is infected from bacteria is a blood test. Antibiotics treatment should be done as soon as the blood test. The cause of bacterial infection is a poor water delivery system. The mixing of food and bird poop in drinking water can grow the bacteria. If this water is consumed by the bird then bird fall sick. To prevent this disease disinfected water bowls should be kept.

  1. Parrot Disease and Cure for “Malnutrition”

Malnutrition is caused to parrot due to lack of nutritious food. If your bird is having nutritious and fresh food then there is no problem. They may be lacking certain vitamins so you should check the bird’s supplement guide to overcome this deficiency. Besides food, the bird should also get enough spectrum sunlight, especially if they are indoors for most of the days. In this case, they require artificial bird lighting. The main symptoms of malnutrition in parrot are weight loss and darkening of feathers. We should be careful in changing diet. Because of that, Vet recommended diet is required and examine your parrot before changing the diet.

  1. Psittacine break and feather disease (PBFD)

This disease is incurable and caused due to Psittacine circovirus. This virus attack feather follicles, cause feather to become stunted and deformed. The feather will drop out. This disease can cause the immune system to become depressed, and makes the bird susceptible to secondary infection. Infected bird will require more warmth as they have no feather, and looks like giant reptilian parrot chick. Mostly cockatoos and cockatiels are affected by this disease. There is no treatment for this disease.

  1. Avian Gastric Yeast (AGY) infection

Avian Gastric Yeast infection is also known as macrorhabdiosis or megebacteriosis. Furthermore, this disease is highly contagious infection is caused by a mixture of yeast infection and secondary bacterial infection. This disease affects budgies mainly. There is no sign and symptoms in early stage. The symptom of this disease is weight loss as AGY affects digestion. The bird may vomit food and mucus, there will be undigested food in the droppings.

  1. Egg binding

Egg binding only affects female parrots of reproducing age. Therefore, this parrot disease is a deadly issue and can even cause death. In this disease, the parrot should take to an avian vet as soon as possible. Egg binding is critical and recognizes its issue to protect your female parrots.

  1. Aspergillosis

Aspergillosis is a fungal infection that causes respiratory pain and is deadly for your parrot. Furthermore, this disease is hard to treat and may need months of pharmaceutical and treatment to cure. The symptoms of this disease are incorporate changes in your parrots breathing, vocalization or wheezing. To prevent this disease you should keep your parrot clean and dry.
