Shiba Inu is an ancient Japanese dog breed which was once owned by hunters. Shiba Inu has some characteristic of a cat which is independent and very clean. They love to groom themselves whenever they get the chance. Shiba Inu is very good watchdogs and can be very aggressive if they think that their people are in any sort of threat. But they are graceful and agile as well. However, in times Shiba Inu can be stubborn, bold and strong-willed as well. Shiba Inu is also one of the most intelligent dog breeds. A Shiba Inu can grow from 1 foot, 1 inch tall to 1 foot, 5 inches tall and weight from 17 to 23 pounds. The average lifespan of a Shiba Inu can have 12 to 26 years long.

Origin and History

As already known, Shiba Inu was originated in Japan several centuries back and was initially used as hunting dogs. People believe that Shiba Inu was created during the same time as Kai Dog, Kishu, Akita and Hokkaido dog breeds. There are many theories of how the Shiba Inu got their name. One of the theories is that they were named after the Brushwood Bushes in which the Shiba Inu hunted. The meaning of Shiba is brushwood. Another theory is that the color of a Shiba Inu is very much similar to the autumn color of the brushwood leaves. Another popular theory about their name is that “Shiba” actually means small size as Shiba Inu is smaller in size than Kai Dog, Kishu, Akita, and Hokkaido. In 1948, the first Shiba Inu Kennel Club was created. Later in 1954, the first Shiba Inu was brought in the United States and in 1979 the first batch of Shiba Inu babies was born in the USA. Later in 1993, they were officially registered in the American Kennel Club.

Feeding

The recommended amount of food for Shiba Inu is ½ to 1.5 cups of high-quality food. The given amount is just an average amount and your dog might need a bit more or less than the said amount. You determine if you Shiba Inu needs more or less by observing their body, age, build, metabolism and activity level. Also, you should feed them as healthy as possible. You should also keep in mind that any dog will eat as much as they can and as much as you give them. This can cause them to gain unnecessary weight which can directly or indirectly harm their health. You should also notice how your Shiba Inu’s body is. If you are able to feel the bones on your Shiba Inu’s body, then you should give your dog some more food than usual. Training

It can be very difficult to train a Shiba Inu as they can be very stubborn and strong-willed. So this dog breed is not recommended for people who are beginners at training. The best training for Shiba Inu or any kind of dog is crate training as it can make home training much more simple and easy. Crate training is very good for dogs who are hard to train.

To adopt a Shiba Inu, the average price range is from $1000 to $2000 as this dog breed has become very popular currently. The Shiba Inu became popular after the movie “Hachi: A Dog’s Tale” was released in 2009. The movie was a very heart touching story and shows the loyalty and love of dogs towards their humans. However, the price can differ based on location, breeder and from where you adopt your dog. When you adopt a dog from a good quality breeder then the price can be higher than from a local breeder. Another important factor is the season. Most breeders tend to increase the price of their dogs when people have their vacations. This is because most of the people think of adopting a dog when they have free time.

Babies

The average number of puppies a Shiba Inu can give birth to is 6 to 8 puppies. The minimum number of babies is 1 whereas the maximum number of babies if 12 to 18 which is still considered normal in dogs. Your Shiba Inu can be pregnant for 63 to 65 days. However, if your dog doesn’t give birth on the 65th day then you should consult the vet or take them for a checkup. Diseases and Their Cure

Allergies

Allergies are very common in any dog breed. Your Shiba Inu can be allergic to food, any kind of substance or chemicals. To prevent this from happening, you must know what they are allergic through vet checkups and keep them away from the thing or food. The symptoms of Allergies are rashes, redness, and irritation. You can also take them to the vet and give them recommended medications.

Tail Chasing

Tail Chasing is also one of the common but unusual conditions in any dog breed. In this condition, your Shiba Inu gets obsessed with their own tail and keeps chasing it around. They get so obsessed that they lose their interest in food and water. If your Shiba Inu has this condition or is about to get this condition you will see them chasing their tail when that is about 6 months old. This condition can be cured very rarely and might make your dog bite you or anyone who tries to stop them as well. If you see them chasing their tail then you should immediately consult a vet.

Hip Dysplasia is a condition where the thighbone of your dog doesn’t fit into the hip joint. This disease is mostly caused when they gained unnecessary weight.
